This official Gibson 490R Modern Classic Rhythm / Neck Humbucker Pickup is the result of the development and growing popularity of rock music as amps became larger and the music became louder and more powerful, a call for more versatile pickups that could split coils through a push/pull knob and prevent feedback when turned up to maximum levels. Gibson answered this call with the introduction of the revolutionary 490s, with the traditional characteristics of the original Patent Applied For pickups the 490R has two key modifications. A four conductor wiring scheme allows the pickup to be connected to any push/pull knob allowing you to split the coils and increase versatility and the introduction of wax potting minimised microphonic feedback. The 490R is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of the original Patent Applied For, with a slight increase in the upper midrange response.
