The 6.5 mm (1/4") thickness is large enough for Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul style nuts and it is wide enough for 7 and some 8 string guitars, 5 and 6 string basses and 6 and some 7 string multiscale guitars. Bone is the traditional nut and saddle material and still preferred by many players, guitar techs and luthiers.
