Description

The Fredric Effects Deeply Unpleasant Companion MkII is an evolution of their popular Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz variant, giving you additional functionality and tweaks.

The Deeply Unpleasant Companion started out as a modified Fuzz optimised for bass guitar but has become a versatile pedal that's equally at home on standard electric guitars. Following requests from bass players, the circuit was modified to preserve more of the low frequencies, so you won’t have to worry about any harsh fizzy tone. Featuring, gain, tone and mid-scoop controls, you'll have plenty of options to craft your guitar tone. Below these controls are a series of push buttons to allow the tone and blend circuits to be bypassed completely, along with a further button to switch the order of the tone and scoop circuits. It can run on a 9 V battery or 9 V DC centre negative power adapter. Insertion of external power adapter removes the battery from the circuit.

The gain knob controls the amount of fuzz effect introduced to your tone, whereas the volume controls the master output. With the blend knob you can take your clean guitar signal and mix it in parallel with the fuzz signal, letting you strike a perfect balance of clarity and tone, a notable upgrade from the original. If you want to only hear the pedal effect, there is a blend bypass button which removes the clean signal completely (entirely wet output). The tone knob is based on the much loved classic Big Muff treble tone stack, allowing you to swiftly define the overall tone with a single control. The scoop knob allows you to dramatically alter the EQ by removing the mid portion from the signal, helping you cut through denser mixes (all the way clockwise is the same as a stock FY-2).

To change up the signal flow further, the pedal even allows you to order the tone and scoop circuits with a single button press (tone then scoop, or scoop then tone). It also boasts a volume boost circuit, to avoid the volume drop characteristic of vintage Shin-Ei FY-2 pedals. A single footswitch engages your fuzz, allowing you to easily bring it in and out of your signal flow. Although designed with the bass player in mind, it also sounds great on electric guitar; especially when used with distortions and overdrives.
