EarthQuaker Devices Blumes Low Signal Shredder Overdrive Pedal is an analogue, three mode, soft clipping bass overdrive that carries the torch of the classic screamer circuit but has a voice all its own.

While embodying most of the characteristics and features of their Plumes Small Signal Shredder, this modified circuit has double the gain and a deeper bass response to retain all your guitar’s low end. Although designed for bass players, it would be a great tool for extended range guitar players or for drop tuning applications. It utilizes internal bipolar power, which gives you more dynamics and all the headroom you could ever desire. The result is a three dimensional tone effect with added clarity that pushes a nice tube amp. At lower gain settings, you’ll get a crunchy tone but once you turn the knob above noon on the gain control, that’s where the similarities stop. With its low end voice and doubled headroom get ready to shake some walls. This device takes a standard 9 V DC power supply with a 2.1 mm negative centre barrel.

Three modes are operated by a switch near the top of the pedal:

• Mode one is symmetrical LED clipping that utilizes a pair of light emitting diodes. This is the crunchiest setting the Blumes has to offer. This signal is less compressed and way more open with lots of output, giving you a powerful raw overdrive.
• Mode two gives you a clean pure gain boost. This eliminates the soft clipping diodes and leaves you with straight OpAmp drive. It delivers the loudest output with the fullest frequency response of the modes and can be used as a helpful clean boost when the gain control knob is set below 11 o’clock
• Mode three utilises an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity. It provides a more transparent tone. Using this mode gives a warmer low end response and lower output. It’s fuzzier with half the output and is the most compressed. It also features flexi-switch technology, which is a relay based, true bypass switching style allowing you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching:

• Standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again to bypass.
• Momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you’d like to use the effect. Once you release the switch the effect will be bypassed, giving you the ability to add a blume of tone for as long as you hold your foot down. This adds a level of interaction between yourself and the pedal not offered by classic overdrives. Please note, the switching is relay based so it requires power to pass signal.
