Description
The Crazy Tube Circuits Hi Power HiWatt & Coloursound Power Boost Dual Overdrive Pedal is an 'amp in a box' overdrive inspired by the sonic combination of two British tone machines that helped shape the sound of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here album.
On the right side of the pedal, you will find a recreation of the Coloursound Power Boost featuring the authentic spec BC184 transistors running on 18 V DC (via an internal voltage booster circuit) and the ultra flexible two band Baxandall EQ circuit. With added extra features, like a master volume control bypass, a reverse log gain control to ensure better sweep and transition from clean to mean (compared to the original’s linear taper) and a toggle switch to engage the higher gain / lower headroom version of the original boost circuit called Overdriver, it drips with careful design quality.
On the left side of the HI POWER you will find an entirely analogue circuit set out to emulate the sound and feel of a Hiwatt amp. Following the path of the famed British tube amplifier, this circuit offers authentic amp tone and feel. From the big bold high-headroom clean sounds to face melting crunchy tones.
True to the last detail, they have even included the full EQ section along with a presence control located at the negative feedback of the power amp simulation circuit. A headroom toggle switch selects between the high headroom 100 watt power section provided by a quartet of EL34s or the lower headroom and compression provided by a 50 W power section with a pair of EL34s when hit hard. Similar in operation to the original amp design, the master volume control was designed to produce more gain at higher settings.
Simple settings on either side of the pedal help you craft your signal path and tones.
For the overdrive side:
- Gain, sets the amount of boost/drive. From clean to fuzzy
- Bass, controls the low end frequencies, bigger and bolder as you turn clockwise
- Treble, controls the high end frequencies, brighter as you turn clockwise
- Master, sets the output volume. Featuring enormous amounts of output making it ideal to drive your amp into natural overdrive. Earlier units didn’t have this feature, when on full it resembles exactly the circuit of those early units
- Switch gives either an 18 V boost (PWR) or 9 V Overdriver circuit (ODR)
On the amp side:
- Volume, controls the amount of amp drive, from high headroom clean to big bold British crunch
- N for Normal channel input has a fuller sound ideal for bright single coil pickup guitars
- B for Bright/Brilliant channel input has enhanced high and mid frequencies and features attenuated low end response, ideal for humbuckers
- L for Linked function to connect the two input channels for increased gain and enhanced frequency response
- bass, treble, middle set the EQ
- Presence, boosts the upper mid and high frequencies
- Master, sets the output volume and emulates the response of the master on the actual amp it was voiced after
The design has been furthered by adding a switch to select between input channels. You can select between the full frequency response of the normal channel of the amplifier, the increased presence and tight low end of the bright channel input or the enhanced frequency response and added gain of those inputs linked together.
Like their other dual overdrive/amp in a box designs Crazy Tube Circuits have also included a passive effects loop to give you the option to connect your more picky pedals between your booster/overdrive and amp in a box, or to use the two sections as separate and independent effects when using an external bypass switcher/looper. It also features a power up bypass/engage preset function for the onboard footswitches. That way you can select which state your pedal will go to when you plug the power supply. This function comes in especially handy to people that use remote pedal switchers and loopers, as they only set the power up state of the pedal once and then operate from the controller.
The Crazy Tube Circuits Hi Power pedal will boost your guitar signal and deliver authentic sounding amp tones that helped shape the sound of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here album.
