Description
The Walrus Audio Mako Series MKII: D1 High Fidelity Delay Pedal is a stereo, high fidelity multi effects delay pedal boasting MIDI, tap tempo and screen readout, all with six delay styles to choose from.
The D1 can create inspirational delay trails ranging from dreamlike and bizarre, to rhythmic and clear, to warm and analogue sounding. With its helpful navigation menu screen for adjusting secondary controls and the hi-fi parameters, you can choose from, Digital, Mod, Vintage, Dual, Reverse and Grain programs. Physical knobs let you control settings, while the backlit OLED screen with 128 x 32 pixels helps show your selections, even in low light scenarios. The sleek Mako series shark graphic is shown on the front of the pedal, swimming just below your feet as you play. Using MIDI, up to 128 settings can be saved and recalled, giving you an expansive control of tweaks. Any preset can be copied and placed into another preset slot. The top three control knobs allow you to change the delay settings for each algorithm:
- TIME allows adjustment of the delay time from approximately 60ms at minimum to 2000ms at maximum and overrides any tap or MIDI tempo for manual time control
- REPEATS controls the amount of feedback within each delay program. At minimum, only one repeat is allowed. At maximum, there will be a near infinite number of repeats (almost self-oscillation)
- MIX sets the ratio of dry to repeated signal, you can choose no repeats. Unity gain can be found between 12 and 2 o’clock. At maximum, only the repeats will be heard (fully wet)
The six algorithms give you plenty of delay style options:
- DIGITAL offers a clean and crystal clear delay that is perfect for rhythmic guitar parts where defined echoes are desired.
- MOD has unique modulation LFOs applied to the repeats that are random and run at multiple rates to create unpredictable pitch modulation. This results in unique sounding repeats perfect for warping minds and scattering trains of thought.
- VINTAGE allows for analogue tape delay inspired tones to be achieved with complex filtering applied to the repeats. Use the tone knob at low settings for darker filtering and at higher settings to roll off low end.
- DUAL employs two delays in parallel, each with different time divisions. When connected in mono, the two delays are added together. When connected in stereo, one set of repeats is sent to the left output and the other is sent to the right, meaning you can set different tap divisions for the left and right channels separately if desired. You can also choose between Parallel, Ping-Pong, and Series style dual delay effects
- REVERSE reads the delay memory backwards creating a unique delay repeat effect known as reverse delay
- GRAIN adds a cloud of randomized grains sampled from a digital delay line. Grains can be modulated in pitch and duration, and blended with standard delay signal for an adjustable level of the effect
Each algorithm program can be fully customized to your taste and playing style with the left encoder knob, which controls six parameters on all programs of the D1: Depth, Rate, Shape, Age, Tone, and Spread. With complete BPM control, you can select specific tempos and read them out on the screen, so you'll never have to guess what tempo you're set at. The Tap/Skip switch also has some secondary functions. For example, holding the Tap switch down ramps up the repeats of the delay creating a momentary burst of sound for as long as held. Some combinations of programs and settings will send the pedal into self-oscillation, giving you the option for some truly wild sonic encounters.
The right encoder (shown with a gear icon) is used to fine tune the delay features like BPM, Ducking and more. Cycle through each option by pressing down on the encoder until you reach the desired control, then turn the encoder knob to adjust. The Left encoder offers creative control over various ways to fine tune each delay program, allowing you to creatively shape things like modulation rate, delay ‘age’, tone and more.
A global preferences menu enables you to set parameters like the display brightness option, MIDI channel selection, firmware version and bypass modes, while a global sound preference menu lets you select preset slots and banks, the analogue/wet mix and output gain. With a huge number of parameters to tweak, a factory reset mode gives you the option to swiftly return to factory default settings, allowing you to compare available possibilities. With 128 included presets packed into its silvery anodised enclosure, the Walrus Audio Mako Series MKII: D1 High Fidelity Delay Pedal will give you multiple effects to help you craft unique sounding guitar parts.
